Man, police in standoff in Salem

September 1, 2003 11:05 AM

Salem-AP -- An armed man is in a standoff with police in Salem near the state Capitol building.

Police say it began when a Capitol Mall officer tried to pull over a car early this morning.

After a short pursuit, police say one person got out and fled on foot and another person, armed with a gun, stayed with the car.

At some time during the morning standoff, police say shots were fired but no one was hurt.

Police have not said who fired the shots or how many were fired.

Officers evacuated the surrounding area and nearby residents have been warned to stay indoors.

Lieutenant Dale Rutledge, a spokesman for the Oregon State Police department, says authorities are trying to resolve the situation peacefully so that no one gets hurt.
