PORTLAND - Unemployment fell for a second straight month in August, a sign that the state's economy is becoming to recover from a prolonged economic downturn.

The state's unemployment rate fell to 8.0 percent in August from 8.2 percent in July. Still, Oregon's unemployment rate leads the nation.

In August, overall employment grew by 3,100 jobs, that's 900 more jobs than a typical August. The trade, transportation and utilities sector lead the way with 1,300 new jobs.

Meanwhile, construction saw another weak month. It gained only 100 jobs, about 1,400 less than a typical August.

Nationally, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate nudged down by a tenth of a point in August, to 6.1 percent.
