This would be freaky, scary

(CNN) -- Police have arrested a "primary suspect" in the case of several women who had their clothes cut from their bodies while they slept, officials in Durham, New Hampshire, said Tuesday.

Jeffrey Gelinas, 27, was arrested Monday night at his home without incident, Durham police Chief David Kurz said.

"He was charged with two counts of loitering and prowling," Kurz said.

The charges are not directly related to the events in the small New Hampshire college town, but Gelinas is the primary suspect in the investigation, Kurz said.

Between June 25 and August 6, seven women reported to police that their apartments in downtown Durham had been broken into during the early morning hours. The women, mostly college students at the University of New Hampshire, all said that when they awoke in the morning, their clothes had been cut from their bodies.

Gelinas, a resident of nearby Barrington, about seven miles from Durham, is not a student at the university, Kurz said.

"We are very relieved about this arrest," a spokesman from the University of New Hampshire said.

Kurz said Gelinas "was released on $2,000 bail on the condition that he not enter the town of Durham, except to visit the police department."
